At first glance Hot Water Beach (located in the town of Withianga in Mercury Bay on the east coast of Coromandel) is nothing special but unlike any other beach.

The magic here is volcanic geothermal sources located at a depth of 15m below the sandy beach with a flow of 15 liters of water per second when visitors use shovels to dig up their own hot water tanks. to more than 60 o C in the sea!

With more than 700,000 visitors per year, Hot Water Beach has become one of the most popular attractions in Coromandel, one of the most popular destinations in New Zealand.

In the winter and summer, as well as the night, when the tide is down, you can create your own natural sand bath on the edge of the sea in just a few minutes.

Due to exposure to air and sea waves as soon as the sand on the surface of the hot water to 64 o C quickly reduced, so visitors will have a warm water to relax in the sea!

In high season, you may have to share your natural swimming pool with other travelers. And time to relax with hot water here also shortened only to dig two times a day and enjoy hot water on the beach for two hours / times, because the tide, sandy beaches with geothermal resources below will disappear …

To avoid the possibility of not digging a hot water tank, you should refer to the tide time up and down in the beach parking lot.

According to the experience of the local people, the places near the rocks on the beach are easy to dig holes underground. And to dig in place, visitors must observe the sand surface. If you smell smoke, or if your feet rub on the sand, feel the smell of sulfur is very light, you can dig this sand with “feeling”.

Accordingly, you only need to dig down 20cm and put your hands on the sand. If the sand is hot, you dig in the right place and when you dig deep you will have a perfect hot water tank in the sky.

If the water gets too hot, you can cool off with a bucket of sea water or dig deep into the tank. If you do not have a shovel, you can rent a shovel at the store for about $ 3.2.
